Times Tables by Grade: What Kids Learn in Grades 2-4

Curricula vary by school and country, but most math programs introduce multiplication in a fairly predictable order across grades 2 through 4. Here's a general pacing guide, plus links to the specific tables most relevant at each stage - and what to do if a child is ahead of, or behind, the usual pace.

Before grade 2: readiness signs

Multiplication builds directly on a handful of earlier skills, so it's worth checking these are solid before pushing times tables specifically. A child is generally ready when they can count comfortably to 100, understand addition as combining groups of objects (not just adding digits on paper), and have started skip-counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s out loud. None of this requires flashcards or drills - counting toys into equal groups, or counting steps two at a time on a walk, builds the same foundation. A child who isn't yet fluent with these readiness skills will usually get more out of a few more weeks there than out of jumping straight into times-table memorization.

Grade 2: building the foundation

Grade 2 usually introduces multiplication as repeated addition, starting with the easiest, most pattern-friendly tables: 2, 5, and 10. These three give the biggest head start because they show up constantly in everyday counting (pairs, nickels, tens) and because their patterns - even numbers, endings of 0 or 5, and adding a zero - are the easiest to spot. A few minutes a day on these three tables is enough at this stage; there's no need to rush ahead.

Grade 3: expanding the range

Grade 3 typically expands to the tables of 3, 4, and 6, while continuing to build fluency with 2, 5, and 10 up to x10 or x12. This is usually the year multiplication becomes a daily fact-fluency focus, often with timed quizzes at school. Doubling tricks help a lot here, since the 4 times table is just the 2 times table doubled, and the 6 times table is just the 3 times table doubled.

Grade 4: mastering the full set

Grade 4 rounds out the remaining, trickier tables - 7, 8, 9, 11, and 12 - and expects fast recall, usually under 3-5 seconds per fact, across all of 1-12. The 9s finger trick and the 11s repeated-digit pattern are especially useful here, since 7, 8, and 9 tend to be the facts kids mix up longest without a memorable shortcut.

What if my child is behind grade level?

Being behind the typical pace for a grade is common and very fixable - it's rarely a sign of a deeper problem, and it usually just means less repetition has happened so far, not that the material is too hard. The most efficient catch-up plan looks different from a full grade-level curriculum: identify exactly which tables are still shaky rather than re-practicing everything from scratch, make sure 2, 5, and 10 are fully solid first regardless of grade (since so much else builds on them), and favor short, low-pressure daily sessions - ten minutes a day for a few weeks reliably outperforms occasional long ones. Game-based formats like Practice mode are especially useful for a child who has become anxious about times tables at school, since they rebuild confidence and speed at the same time, without the stakes of a graded test.

Pacing practice across the school year

Whatever the grade, the same pacing rule applies: introduce one or two new tables at a time, keep reviewing everything learned so far, and favor short daily sessions over long weekly ones. A child who is ahead of their grade's typical pace can keep moving forward the same way, one or two tables at a time, rather than jumping straight to memorizing 1-12 all at once.
